We all should have known this would be a really big subject for a long time to come by how much hell companies like Napster received when they first entered the scene! Artists were complaining like school ground children about this new phenomenon called “file sharing” which to them meant stealing or giving their music away for free.
So the question had to be asked; “Has file sharing ruined the music industry?”
I’m sure if we were to take a poll of independent artists and major artists the results would be surprising.
A lot of indie artists look at file sharing as the 1st big move towards evening the playing fields.. Now everyone seems to have much closer to the same opportunities of being signed as it is all about how much each artist can hustle their own careers. Major artists are getting smaller budgets and also required to promote just like indie artists though on a larger scale.
File sharing is actually a great tool for artists to market their music straight to the public and build fans by personally capturing their trust through samples of the music. The days of buying an album and only liking 2 songs are almost over thanks solely to file sharing! Artist like Drake or Taylor Swift released their 1st projects for FREE on the internet and look where their at now! Soulja Boy got over 1 million youtube views of his page and look where he’s at now!!
Without the idea of file sharing would there be such great internet marketing tools called widgets? How cool are those? $LINK1%
Widgets allow independent artists the opportunity to build up their own fan base by marketing their music directly to the fans as FREE downloads or short samples! Artists are able to send fans videos, press clips, and interactive maps to their shows!
With the recent copyright issues that companies like Limewire have faced it seems like the first steps are being made towards eliminating the file sharing phenomenon. Is this really a good idea though?
As a new artist the first task is to get your music heard by potential fans. What better way than to give away FREE downloads? Word of mouth is probably the best thing for a new artist as there is no better way to be heard than from a referral. A person cannot refer a new artist if they’ve never heard any of the music. Since most new artists have no budget to be on the radio or TV, file sharing is the only means for marketing directly to fans. So I guess the answer really depends on who you are talking to!! Personally I think file sharing is one of the best things that has happened to the music biz!
I look forward to your views on the subject.
